With the release of World of Warcraft: Dragonflight, just around the corner, hitting US and EU servers on November the 28th, the topic of increasing Dragonriding skill becomes more and more relevant. One aspect in particular is very important, apart from, “what the heck is Dragonriding” and that is “how to increase dragonriding skill” for your character.
We will cover all the important aspects of this brand new feature that is going to become a staple in WoW Dragonflight. Wear your brown pants on and let’s dive in!
What is Dragonriding?
If it wasn’t apparent from the title of the next expansion, “Dragonriding” is a new skill introduced for all races. It replaces the now “defunct” and “boring” regular flying skill and is unique to Dragonflight zones.
Instead of snoozing from one corner of the map to another, you will have to actively “fly” your dragon with the use of his abilities.
Dragonriding in essence is like a never-ending minigame:
- You “take off” by pressing space (or whichever key bind you have for “jump”)
- Use movement (height) and VIgor to power up your dragon’s abilities to gain speed and soar longer
- Try to stay in the air as long as possible or to get to a place as fast as possible in the new quests, races and challenges
Your overall goal is to increase your Dragonriding skill so you will be much faster and agile.
Where do you get a Dragonriding skill?
Since the entire expansion revolves around the idea of using the new dragon mount as the ultimate means of transportation, you will be getting your Dragonriding skill in the first leveling area. It takes about 30 minutes to obtain the unique mount and to start leveling up your Dragonriding skill.
How do you level up your dragonriding skill?
Dragonriding is an account-wide skill that can only be used during the expansion’s length. This means that you only need to level it up to the maximum level once and your alts will benefit from it all the same.
Leveling your Dragonriding skill is fairly straightforward – all you have to do is to find the Golden Glyphs, scattered throughout the zones in the Dragon Isles. These glyphs give you points that you will use to unlock talents in your Dragonriding skill.
There are 9 rows of talents – each corresponds with a new or more powerful version of your dragon’s abilities. Vigor is a rechargeable resource that will let you use your other abilities.
You will notice that there are offensive and defensive abilities like Dragonsrider Initiative and Compassion which impact how you enter combat. The first adds an AOE effect that stuns / damages enemies you “ram” into with your dragon. The second gives a passive shield for 30s that restores 1% health + movement speed when you dismount.
As you increase your Dragonriding skill, you will notice you can fly faster, further and can use more abilities, like a true Dragon Rider!
What mounts can you use for Dragonriding?
In Dragonflight, you can only use the island’s drakes as your mount. Don’t get upset yet – these can be fully customizable (from colors to trinkets and body parts) AND you will get more and more options as you quest, raid and complete challenges.
The roster consists of 4 mounts:
- Renewed Proto-Drake
- Winborne Velocidrake
- Highland Drake
- Cliffside Wylderdrake
What is the top speed for Dragonriding?
Here comes to really fun part of Dragonflight. Once you level up your Dragonriding skill to the maximum and you learn how to take advantage of every ability of your drake, you can reach up to 930% flight speed!
This is a little bit more than the 410% flying speed we’ve had so far, wouldn’t you agree? 🙂
Why is Dragonriding such a big deal?
With the addition of Dragonriding skill in the new expansion, Blizzard has successfully transformed flying into an activity in itself. And since traversal and movement are an integral part of World of Warcraft, being fast and agile while also impacting combat is going to change your gameplay a lot.
